HAPKIDO – Etiquette

 

Following is a list of some of the more common ways we show respect to each other before, during and after practice:

1. Arrive on time to class

2. Notify instructors in advance if you must miss a class

3. Bow when entering the practice room

4. Bow and shake hand with other students as you see them before class begins

5. At the beginning of class, at the instructor’s command:
a) Line up from highest rank to newest beginner
b) Bow to American and Korean flags
c) Bow to instructor (while saying “Please Sir/Ma’am”)

6. If arriving late to class, step onto the edge of the mat and wait for the instructor to acknowledge you, then bow and join the class

7. When the instructor is talking, stop practice and all side discussions until he/she is finished

8. Acknowledge an instructor’s directions or comments by responding “Yes Sir/Ma’am”

9. Keep fingernails and toenails short, and remove all jewelry before class

10. Wash your uniform regularly

11. At the end of class, at the instructor’s command:
a) Line up from highest rank to newest beginner
b) Bow to American and Korean flags
c) Bow to instructor (while saying “Thank you Sir/Ma’am”)
d) Bow to other black belt instructors (“Thank you Sirs and/or Ma’ams”)

12. When sitting, sit in a cross-legged style with hands resting in your lap, or kneel with knees and feet together and sit on your heels

13. Horseplay is strictly forbidden and proper control should always be used when executing techniques

14. Foul language will not be tolerated

15. Let the instructor know if you must leave the mat during practice and bow when leaving
